Royal Oak City Commission Special Meeting Downtown Public Restrooms Workshop

-
City Hall, Room 122
203 S. Troy Street
Royal Oak, Michigan 48067

Anyone planning to attend the meeting who has need of special assistance under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is asked to contact the city clerk’s office at 248-246-3050 at least two (2) business days prior to the meeting.

Following a recent bid process, construction estimates for a proposed public restroom annex at the Farmers Market came in at nearly double the anticipated project budget. In response, the City Commission has pivoted from the original plan and directed staff to explore more cost-effective and innovative solutions.

Access to a public restroom is a matter of public health, human dignity, and essential infrastructure for a welcoming downtown. While permanent facilities remain a long-term priority, the Commission has asked the Department of Public Services to identify a pilot solution that improves the current absence of facilities—particularly in Centennial Park—and provides real-world data over the next year on usage, maintenance needs, and design considerations.

This approach reflects the City’s commitment to inclusion and accessibility while ensuring fiscal responsibility. Our goal is to test and learn, ultimately delivering a solution that supports a vibrant, equitable, and hospitable downtown Royal Oak.
